ABOUT

The Desperados, one the most (in)famous and fun wagon groups of the Salt Grass Trail Ride (SGTR), is made up of folks from every walk of life—bankers and brokers, attorneys and architects, housewives and husbands and even a few “real” cowboys. Most of us hail from Houston, but we have riders from throughout the U.S. and even some from other continents. Some of our members have ridden the historic trail for more than 30 years; some are second and third generation riders. 2016 was the 50th Salt Grass Trail Ride for Welcome Wilson, Sr., who is also a Desperado founding member. There are about 29 wagons on the Salt Grass trail. The Desperados call Wagon 13 home.

Lazy W Ranch

Lots of Desperados work year-round to keep our group the best. Beverly (our Wagon Boss) and Gary Smith’s Lazy W Ranch is our unofficial headquarters as they provide and care for our wagon during the year. January brings our annual Warm-Up Ride and Desperado dance party, hosted at the Lazy W Ranch by Beverly and Gary. You will find Gary singing “Cattle Call” with his band, an eerie reminder of the song that is our morning alarm clock on the SGTR.

Winning Tradition

We are proud of the numerous awards bestowed upon us over the years.  They are symbolic of the teamwork, mutual respect and admiration Desperados have for each other. The group has won more awards than any other wagon in the history of Salt Grass
